Crash’N Smash Derby
The arena game. No drift series will be complete without destroying 3-4 cars in and arena. This games shines by the choice of music it provides you, the simplicity of it, the number of power ups available and the number of upgrades you can perform on the car. A great game!
Did you know? Why not front wheel drive?
If you have read the article about why rear wheel drive is best for drifting games, then this question is pretty much straight-forward. Front wheel drive are cars that are propelled by the front wheel, the front wheel moves the entire car and also is responsible for turning, the rear wheels are only there to support and move along. The rear wheel does not control anything. It basically just follows the front wheels. Which is why it makes it harder to use them in drifting games.
For a quick reference, rear wheel drive have a shared task for all the four wheels, the ones at the back will give the driving force to move the car, while the two front wheel will give the direction of the drift and it’s counter steer to make the car go back into a straight position. For the front wheel drive cars though, the front wheel is responsible for both TURNING and DRIVING. So you cannot lose much traction on it. The back wheel do not work much in a front wheel drive car.
Compared to back wheel drive which normally over steer, front wheel drive naturally under steer. Even at high speed, they under steer, this is because it has to push the car forward and turn at the same time, so it will under steer. Try the shopping cart again for a reference. Try pulling it from the front, the smaller part of the cart. Now give a very sharp turn and pull faster, you will notice that the cart will slide outward dangerously and you will not be able to control it properly. Be careful again not to knock anything down. This is the difference between front and rear wheel drive and the reason why rear wheel drive car are preferred for drifting games.
Now it is not impossible to drift with a front wheel drive, it is just hard. To achieve over steer, you will need to give your car very hard, fast and short braking. This is very difficult to master, but once you get it, it will seem like a breeze. By giving those hard, fast and short braking, you will make the car oversteer only a little. It is important not to lose too much traction or your will keep sliding in that direction and lose control. Therefore this is the reason why front wheel drive will need a very slow approach speed around a corner. Too fast speed will cause the car to lose control.
This is why front wheel drive cars are at a disadvantage compared to the rear wheel drive. But this does not mean you cannot participate in drifting games with it, just you either have to be very good at it, or you will be very disadvantaged compared to the others.
